How to maintain your Carpet floor?

red hr line

Carpets make the cosiest and warmest of all the flooring options. There’s no other material that could offer you the comfort and softness that is typical to these floors. Despite all these benefits carpets need special care. They can more easily accumulate dirt and require maintenance more often than other flooring options. While dirt can prove to be abrasive to the fibres, spills and stains must be cleaned immediately to prevent damages. If you have carpet flooring in your home or if you are considering installing new ones, the following tips are going to help you.

Vacuum Regularly

Carpets must be vacuumed more often than other floors because they will easily collect all the dirt and mud. It doesn’t matter whether you require your kids and guests to take off their footwear at the entrance, carpets will still build up lots of dust and dirt faster than other floorings. This can not only help enhance the looks but also help extend the lifespan of the flooring. Vacuuming itself offers many benefits:

- It helps in removing most of the dirt

- It helps minimize the impact of foot traffic

- It helps eliminate dullness

- It helps remove allergens

Although a once a week schedule is recommended, if you can vacuum more often, you will be doing better for the overall maintenance of your floor. Especially the areas that receive more foot traffic should be vacuumed at least twice a week.

Remove Spots & Stains Immediately

If you have a hard floor, you may afford to wait for some time to remove the spills and stains (however it is not recommended). But with carpet floors, if you don't remove them immediately the stains are most likely to become permanent. The moment something is spilled, blot it dry and vacuum it. Avoid rubbing because it can not only damage the fabric, it could settle the stains into the fabric. If you don't blot it dry, the water could lead to the development of mould. If you remove the spills and stains immediately and vacuum regularly, you will not have to spend on expensive cleaners.

Deep Cleaning

Your carpet needs deep cleaning once a year. Most of the new vacuums will have deep steam cleaning feature, but it will be better to have the carpets deep-cleaned at least once a year. A professional cleaning service can ensure that the job is done properly. It will also help in extending the life of the flooring. The pros use more powerful vacuum and specially designed cleaners that help achieve “deeper” cleaning. They can reach the roots of the fabric and remove stains and dirt that cannot be accessed through normal vacuum.

When it comes to deep cleaning, it depends on the traffic. It may be done once a year in case of low traffic or once every 3 months if he traffic is heavy.

Protective Coating

New carpets are usually treated with stain and soil resistors that help protect them for at least a couple of years. You will have to re-coat them after 2 to 3 years. It is recommended that the protective coating be reapplied by professionals. The function of the soil resistor is to slide off the soil of the fabric. Besides, the spots will also be easier to remove.

These are the most important steps that you should take to maintain your carpet flooring. Carpets are relatively expensive to install. So make sure to do all that is necessary to keep them in great shape and to extend their life. While most of the maintenance tasks can be handled yourself, you will require professional help once in a while.
