How to winter proof your home

red hr line

Before the winter arrives, every home owner has few tasks to complete. While some of these tasks are seemingly easy and least time consuming, many of them might not be easy or might even need professional assistance to complete; but completing these tasks before the winter arrives in its full glory is important in order to ensure that you do not get into a fix during the cold winter months.  For people living in the areas that experience heavy snow fall during winter taking steps in the right time to ensure that their home is winter proof is vital. Here is a guideline for the home owners to help them out on how to make their home truly winter proof.

Check your attic: This is the right time when you need to check the attic of your home minutely for any crack or damage as well as any mold or fungus infection. The attic of your home serves a major purpose in insulating your home from the cold of outside and hence being completely sure about the condition of the attic and taking reparative measures if needed is vital to make your home winter proof. If there are small cracks in the attic before the winter arrives, there are maximum chances that those small gaps will become larger during the cold winter and hence repairing them right now is important. Also ensure that the attic of your home is free from any infection that can take a severe shape during the winter.

Take a look at the roof: It is important to ensure that the roof of your house is in the best condition before the winter arrives.  While it is vital to check the roof for any crack or damage, it is also important to ensure that the water harvesting pipes circling the roof are in the right condition and are not blocked with twigs or leaves. Ensure that there is no place where water can be clogged on the roof and keep the roof completely clean of any debris. If required, opt to give a coat of paint on the roof before the winter arrives.

Check out the doors and windows: Having a broken window pane or a lose door that does not close properly is quite common in every home. You can actually leave with them but only until the winter arrives. So, to make your home comfortable during winter, check out for any such broken openings in your home and repair them properly. It can be also very effective to make your home winter proof if you can seal in the joints of windows and doors at least temporarily. Using heavy curtains on the doors and the windows is the other way to ensure that minimum heat can escape from the rooms.

Clean the gutters and drains: Checking out the gutters and drains of your house before the winter arrives is always a good option. If there is a clogging in the drains during the winter it is most expected to take even a more severe shape and can be very difficult to find and repair when the area around is already covered with snow. So, check out the drains and gutter lines, ensure that they are in proper working condition and can easily sustain through the winter. In case, there are minor issues, do not neglect, because it will take only a single day of heavy snow fall to turn a minor issue to a severe drainage problem.

Apart from the above, also arm yourself with sufficient rock salt, de-icer as well as shovels and other equipment for removing snow from around your house.
