How to Update Your Home with The Top Flooring Trends

red hr line

If you feel your home lacks pizzazz, one of the best ways to update your décor is to install new flooring. Since flooring trends are constantly changing, your home can look dated in less than a decade just because of your flooring. Since your floors are one of the largest surfaces in your home, you get more bang for your buck when you install new flooring. Here we review the easiest ways to update your home with the top flooring trends for 2020.

Cork Flooring

Cork flooring is an excellent choice for many areas of the home including the kitchen, kid’s playrooms, and home theatres. They reduce echo and noise making it ideal for large spaces. Cork floors come in tons of colours and can be installed in interesting patterns. They are also beautifully different in their texture and look. Cork is resistant to stains and water so can even be used in bathrooms.

Softer Toned Wood Floors

Some people find the richer toned woods create a stuffy, older look to their homes. The trend towards softer tones and white-washed wood floors have become more popular than ever. Wood undergoes a bleaching process that removes the natural tone of the wood, while still leaving the beauty of the grain. The result is a softer toned wood that helps open the space in the room adding a lighter, airier feel.

Distressed Wood

Distressed wood floors are treated to speed up the aging process, so they appear more worn and less glossy. The processes vary but often include hand scraping on plank edges, dents, “wormholes” and removing most of the finish. If you want to add a more rustic feel to your home, this is the ideal solution.

Patterned Wood Floors

Instead of laying wood floors flushed, many designers are installing planks in interesting patterns to create more texture and interest. Some are even combining contrasting colours to accentuate the patterns. One of the most popular looks is the herringbone pattern, as well as the classic chevron style of French chalets and Paris apartments. This is a highly stylish look that can be used in just about any room or setting.

Black and White Checks

This vintage look is making a comeback in a big way. It is a luxurious high-end look, but can also be made more whimsical with punches of bright colours in the room like yellow or red. It creates a bold floor statement and can be used with different tile options from rich opulent marbles to basic porcelain or combinations of vinyl tiles. Although it is a new twist on an old look, retro is always contemporary!

Reclaimed Wood

This tends to be a more expensive item because of the time-consuming process. Reclaimed wood floors use naturally aged wood sourced from old barns, cedar decks, porches, etc. To transform the wood into flooring it takes some effort hence the cost. However, you can now find reclaimed wood “look” floors that mimic the look very well. This creates a very cozy, rustic feel to a room, softer than distressed wood as colours are muted. Many people are using the flooring on walls as a focal point behind beds, around fireplaces, as kitchen backsplashes or as wainscoting. You can even find porcelain floors and vinyl tiles with the reclaimed look.

The exciting news is that thanks to technology, there are more flooring designs available than ever. If you would like to learn more about Calgary flooring trends, speak to the experts at Home Flooring today.
