Types of Flooring for Open Floor Plans

red hr line

A home with an open floor plan is a dream of many. The days when closed box-like rooms were in trend are long gone. Modern homes of today have rooms that flow into one another, forming a large space without any obstacles or borders. Joining two or more spaces by removing partition walls will make your space larger but with the right floor you can make it look even more spacious. You can use the same flooring material for all the areas or different materials for each area. But if you use different materials, you may interrupt the flow between the rooms. Due to this reason you have to be very careful. Flooring for open floor plans can be tricky. If you choose to use different material for, let’s say kitchen, then make sure you don’t use contrasting colours. Use the colour that blends or matches with the flooring material used for the rest of the area.

Here are few types of flooring materials that are best suited for open floor plans:

  • Natural Stone
For all kinds of open floor plans, continuous flooring is the best way to make the rooms transit into one another. Installing a wooden floor from the living area against a vinyl tile floor in the kitchen generally doesn’t look right. As kitchens usually need easy-to-clean hardy floors, going with natural stone floors throughout the area is one of the best options. You can choose alternate colours for different rooms but make sure they blend well with each other. You can also place area rugs in the dining or living area to add warmth to your space. Rugs are a great way to add coziness in a house with an open floor plan.
  • Strand-Woven Bamboo
Strand-woven bamboo flooring can be installed in the kitchen and rest of your home because of its resilience and hardiness. This flooring is one of the most durable and hard-wearing choice for an open floor plan house. But before installation confirm from the manufacturers that they used eco-friendly adhesives in the flooring’s manufacturing process. Strand-woven bamboo floors are harder than most of American hardwood floors including oak, hickory, maple, and ash. Another great advantage of this flooring is that it’s eco-friendly, which is why it’s preferred by a lot of people.
  • Low-maintenance Aggregate Flooring
For open floor plans, nothing can beat the durability and cost of an epoxy aggregate flooring. This flooring can be installed throughout your space. It appears seamless and makes open floor areas look even larger. Also, this flooring type has limitless colour and design options, so you can easily pick the sizes, shapes, patterns, and colours of your choice. The aggregate flooring consists of small pebbles, stones, and chips and is hand-floated over wood or concrete for a smooth outlook. It also has an additional protective cover of epoxy sealant.
  • Mediterranean Warmth
In a house with a Tuscany, Spanish or Mediterranean architecture, Saltillo tiles in square or octagon shapes installed throughout can bring warmth to your space. You can also extend them to outdoor areas to create an integrated appearance between the exterior and interior areas in the home. Although, tiles usually give a cold feeling, these Saltillo tiles come in multiple shades of reds which gives your home an earthy, warm base.

If you opt for continuous flooring type throughout your home, then natural stone, strand-woven bamboo, and tiles are your best options. Natural stone will make your open floor plan look more spacious and integrated. These floors are easily to clean and versatile enough to fit in many different room. Same is the case with tiles and strand-woven bamboo floors. So if your open floor plan includes living room, kitchen, and lobby, you can count on these flooring types to fit well in all the areas. One the other hand, if you choose to go with a visual breakup between different areas in your open floor plan, then going with different floor types is a great option. But keep one tip in mind when using more than one flooring type: use different floor colours but make sure they complement each other. The rest is all up to you and your style preferences!
