Carpet Colors and their Reaction with Stains

red hr line

Every color has its own set of physical and chemical properties. Each color reacts in a unique way to external factors such as stain and soiling. For instance, light colored clothes easily get dirty and can show the stains for long; however, dark clothes do not show stains easily; however, it is more difficult to clean stains from dark clothes.

In the case of carpets, many of us believe in buying dark colored carpets over their lighter counterpart precisely due to the scare of staining and dirtying of the carpets. We have small children, pets, visitors and meal times that can be easily stain the carpets. So, does white or light colored carpets a wrong choice for homes? Or are the dark colored carpets better at hiding the dirt in them?

Stain reaction with light carpet colors

As it is easily understood, light colored carpets such as white carpet will show stains easily than the dark variety. Stains irrespective of their color and texture can be easily spotted and are conspicuous against a white or light colored background.

On the contrary, one needs to understand this basic fact that white or light colored carpets are much easier to clean than dark carpets. One can opt to select just about any oxidizing product that can help in removing the stain. One does not need to worry about the bleach or stain removal agent causing any damage to the color of the carpet or result in its fading.

Dark carpets require lighter stain removal products and most importantly, products that do not damage the color of the carpet need to be used. Harsh stain removers can result in fading of colors and even leave patches of damaged fiber on it.

Stain reaction with dark carpet colors

Dark carpets work well in hiding even the most difficult of stains. Imagine spilling the dark red wine on your carpet. If it is safe dark brown color, the stain would not be visible much. It is difficult to figure out a stain on dark colors easily.

However, if the spill and stains are quite frequent, then regular cleaning can result in the fading of colors and the carpet area where the stain was can slowly get discolored with time. The discoloration on a dark carpet becomes more obvious and looks unpleasant. This is a major disadvantage of dark colors as their color can get damaged over a period of time of cleaning and maintenance. With time and maintenance, dark carpets look dirtier and worn out than their lighter counterparts.

In addition to the difference in the reaction with stains, both light as well as dark colored carpets show dirt easily. They need to be cleaned with proper care and thoroughly to ensure that no dirt is sticking on to them. Dark carpets again can conceal dirt better than their lighter varieties.

Which color to choose for your carpet?

If you are planning to buy a carpet and worried about the color to select, go for one that is neither too light nor too dark. Blue or red are hard to maintain as they can lose their shine and brightness very easily with time and regular cleaning. If you are interested in buying a colored carpet, make sure you select a nylon variety instead of woolen. Nylon fiber that is stain resistant and can be cleaned easily still goes better in maintaining the beauty of the carpet a long way. Moreover, if you opt for the darker variety, avoid staining them at the best or clean them with less reactive stain removal products at the earliest.
