How to Choose the Right Carpet for your Home?

red hr line

There is a world of carpet materials, colors and styles out there. So when considering new carpets for your home, it can be difficult to choose any one option. Quality is most important  but  there are tens of other points to be taken into account.

Handmade vs Machine-made Carpets

Handmade rugs are usually more durable compared to machine-made carpets. Most of the time, handmade rugs are made from natural materials like wool or cotton that last longer and are safer for the environment. Because the carpets are hand-knitted, each strand gets individually tied for additional strength.

Consider Foot Traffic

Consider the volume of foot traffic in the different areas before choosing the carpets for different rooms. The entrance room and the stairs need carpets that can bear the heavy traffic. If you get a lot of guests or if you have a larger family, you must choose carpets with denser and more durable fabric.

Consider Carpet Styles

Once you have determined the type of material for your carpets, choosing the style and color can be an even more daunting task. Consider the kind of activity in each room before choosing the style. For example, you will want to install something in your bedroom that is more comfortable. Besides, you will want a color that is simpler and promotes sleep. For example, green and blue are the more suitable colors for bedrooms.

On the other hand, you could choose a brighter color or pattern for your living room. Brighter colors can help hide unwanted stains which are typical in dining rooms and family rooms. The same principle applies to rooms where you will be spending a lot of time.

You will also want to have a darker carpet color if you have kids or pets in your home. Areas like the hallway that receive heavy foot traffic should be installed with some low-pile carpet that could withstand lots of crushing.

Longevity

How often you want to change your carpet will also be a determining factor. Choose something more traditional if you want to keep the carpet for more than two decades. Some carpets are designed to wear well for up to a decade. If given proper care, some materials can last a lifetime. But if you are the kind of person who likes to change the colors and patterns in your home, choose something cheaper that can be replaced after some time. Wool and most of the natural materials are long-lasting. Many of the synthetic materials are relatively cheaper and can be replaced too often.

You will want to consider different color schemes based on the décor in different rooms. Or else a multi-colored carpet with neutral base can be installed in all the rooms to achieve a consistent feel. Consider all these factors when choosing the perfect fabric, color and design for your home. If you are a busy person and don't have the time to clean the carpets too often, consider installing low-maintenance materials that require minimal vacuuming and cleaning.
