How to winterize the garage floor?

red hr line

When the temperatures begin to fall the garage floor is the last thing that comes to your mind to prepare for the season. During the winters harmful road de-icers and rock salt which adhere to the base of your vehicle get piled up on the garage floor. For those who have concrete garage floors, they will be familiar with the damages from the spalling and the salt stains that can be seen during the spring season.

Ways to protect the garage floor:

It is never late to prevent damages from occurring to the garage floor during the winter season. The foremost thing that you should do to prepare the garage floor for winters is to give it a proper cleaning for removal of any contaminants on the floor. This would reveal any imperfections that need to be repaired before spring sets in. The easiest way to protect the concrete is using a garage floor containment mat. These help in collecting the de-icing solutions, snow melt and road debris which gets deposited on the floor from the tires.

The other solution is to seal the garage floor. The siliconate penetrating sealer or an acrylic sealer will do the job for you. The difference between the two is that the acrylic sealer gives a glossy finish. The sealers help in creating a barrier which prevents salts, debris and de-icing solutions to enter the pores present on the concrete floor. The best part is that these can be applied by novice home-owners and are inexpensive.

When you want the entire garage floor to be protected during the winters with mats, a variety of choices are available in the form of roll out garage floor mats. These garage mats also help you keep your feet insulated from the cold of the concrete. The floor mats that you intend to lay on the garage floor must extend till the doorway to prevent any debris from entering the house.
